507 Ask Mary Ann Q&A

Hi Mary Ann!

We live in the house where my husband grew up. It is originally from the 1800’s and has had additions put on. He remembers a few “experiences” with spirits in his home growing up and some were a bit scary. Since we have moved in, nothing too scary has happened, but I know my two young girls get scared sometimes. I also have seen my husband’s father (who passed away about 8 or 9 years ago) pass by a doorway in the hall. Now, I certainly do not mind his father being there but the other spirits I wish would go away. I have heard of different ways to ward them off, but I am even a bit scared of doing so because I do not want to anger them. Since nothing really bad has happened, I sometimes feel like I should just let it be.

What do you think? If I did something with Sea Salt or other methods, is there a chance that I would make an okay situation worse? If my late father-in-law does visit, would he still be able to? It is his house after all! :)

Thank you for your help in advance,

Angela, Michigan

Hi Angela,

Just because you have seen your father-in-law does not mean he is earthbound. I cannot see spirits that have crossed over, but many people can, especially children.

Sometimes older homes creak and make strange noises. This could be what your girls are scared of. Besides catching a glimpse of your father-in-law the house, it sounds like it is pretty quiet.

Having the house blessed by an ordained priest or minister would make the whole family feel more comfortable.

Hope this helps.

Mary Ann

LETTER 2

Hi There

My name is Darlene and I am 45 years of age.  I am an American who currently resides in Auckland, New Zealand (since 2003).

My mother died in February 2008 at the age of 67.  She lived in Bradenton, Florida.  My half-sister, Diane, deliberately left me uninformed of her death because I had been disinherited back in 2003 for stealing over half of my mother’s life savings.  I learned of mother’s passing when she did not return my calls (I would call her about once a week).  I was worried so I sent a sheriff’s deputy to her home to check on her.  They proceeded to inform me that mother had passed away two weeks prior.  By then, Diane had her cremated (against mother’s wishes), and raided mother’s home, stealing everything out of it that had any value.  There was nothing I could do about that from here in New Zealand.

Last month, I was able to sell what little was left of mother’ s estate property.  There is more to the story; how she died and what happened afterwards is simply unbelievable.  It has been extremely difficult trying to come to terms with what happened to mother and losing her the way I did. I still have not been able to return to Florida to visit her grave.  It makes me sick what Diane did to mother.  I desperately wish there was a way I could find out that mother knows what happened after she died - and most importantly, that she knows how much I loved her and always will.  My mother’s name was Ellen.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Sincerely,

Darlene

Hello Darlene,

Your story is a true nightmare. Unfortunately this happens a lot, when relatives live out of state, let alone out of the country.

I cannot tell from a letter or email if your mother has crossed over or not, but I can assure you she knows what your half sister has done. If she stayed earthbound or crossed over she would have watched all of the things going on.

I am sure she knows how much that you loved her. The next time that you have a dream of her, ask her what happened. She will be able to tell you if she has crossed over.

My deepest sympathies.

Mary Ann

ASK MARY ANN - 10/26

Dear Mary Ann,

Why do ghosts come out at Halloween? Do the just like to scare us?  I do not even want to leave my house on October 31st. If I do not open my doors or windows they can not get in, right?

When I was a child I remember seeing a ghost dripping in blood, and I am pretty sure it was trying to catch me, it was Halloween night.I have been so afraid ever since, should I be?

Best,

Fraidy Cat

Kitty (my real name)

Hi Kitty,

Let’s try to get you some real facts. When you have knowledge of something, you should not be so afraid.

There are NOT more ghosts around at Halloween; it is just because everyone talks about them more, that it seems that there are more.

People love to get scared, especially at Halloween. Look at how many haunted places that you can pay to go into and get scared. Then there are the ghost movies, television shows, books, all kinds of creepy beings, most of the kids costumes are scary.

Locking yourself in your house on October 31st and not opening your doors or windows actually will not keep a ghost out! (Sorry)

An earthbound spirit does not need an open door; they do however use the doorway. They are pure energy and they walk right through the closed door, so locking the door will not work.

Yes, spirits like to scare the living. They do not eat or sleep, so they need human energy to keep going. If they can scare you, look at all of the energy you put out! They suck that right up. They do like to hide in dark places, basements, attics, garages, (like spiders!) and from the time we were little kids we never wanted to go into those places. Believe me a lot of adults still will not go into these places.

A ghost does not bleed! The body of a living person bleeds, sustains serious injuries, or is missing parts and pieces, the spirit is always whole, pure energy – no blood.

Somebody played a cruel joke on you when you were a child, and it has affected you ever since. Nobody should ever scare anybody that badly, whether they are an adult or a child.

It is bad enough when you really do have a ghost problem in your house, let alone playing a prank on someone. Sometimes an earthbound spirit will actually haunt the person who always scares someone. Maybe the person who did this to you now really has his own ghost!

So Kitty, you do not have to be afraid of Halloween. Consider it a fun holiday, instead of a scary one.

Mary Ann

LETTER 2

Dear Mary Ann,

Can you please tell us what to do, we have a problem and need some advice.

We are huge Ghost Whisperer fans and watch every week and wonder if this really goes on, in real life, now it is happening to us!

Let me start from the beginning.

My wife Linda and me (Joe) bought our first house about 14 months ago. We both have steady jobs, and houses were a bargain. We are both 22 years old. I am in construction work, and Linda is an RN in a nursing home.

We bought what they call a “fixer upper”. We are not afraid of hard work. Our lease was not up on our apartment for five months, so we figured we would get a lot done before we moved in. Boy, were we wrong.

The house was built in the 1930’s, but we knew that the kitchen and bathroom were going to have to be done before we moved in. The rest was livable, we could do the work after we moved in if we ran out of time.

The very first day that we got the keys and were walking through the house, any floor that we were on — from the basement, first, second, or the attic – we could hear loud talking and screaming coming from the floor that we were not on. We would run to where the noise was coming from and there was nothing there. Then it would start from the floor that we just left!

We smelled foul odors like a dead animal, but we could find nothing. There were electrical problems. we knew it was an old house, but light bulbs would actually go missing. There were tools disappearing and then reappearing on another floor. If Linda and I were there together it was really active. If only one of us were there, it seemed to be a little quieter.

What should have taken two or three months now has gone on for six months. We took our apartment lease out for another six months. You can not move into a house without running water.

Then, the week before Halloween it is like everything escalated and got ten times worse! Louder noises, more bangs, and foul smells. We even had the police out, but they could find nothing. Halloween night we went over because we did not want the house to get egged or vandalized on the outside. (The inside was bad enough.) Inside paint was spilled over; it looked like blood, but was actually rust colored marks all over the new wallpaper. Pipes under the new kitchen sink were unconnected.

Help!! Do we have to move?  If we do we will loose everything. Why did it get worse over Halloween?

Best,

Joe and Linda

Dear Joe and Linda,

WOW you have a real situation going on.

Without talking to you from your house or being there in person I can not tell you who they are, but you have some earthbound spirits in the house with a real attitude.

I would guess at least two spirits for sure, one male and one female, so I am pretty sure that it is the original owners of the house.

Everything that you have described, an earthbound spirit can do. For some reason they do not want you or Linda in their house. They have done everything to try and scare you out of the house.

Halloween does not have anything to do with them getting more active, if you check a calendar it was probably the week working up to the full moon. Earthbound spirits always have more energy that week, plus with all of the aggravation and stress you and Linda are going through, that puts out even more energy for them to use. They do not eat or sleep, but use human energy to exist. They have been feeding off of you and Linda ever since you started remodeling.

There could be a few reasons that they do not want you in “their house.” They could be upset because you are not family, or you could be a different race from them, and they are prejudiced, so they are trying to keep you from moving in. They could also be just plain mean.

Here are a couple of suggestions that should help calm the house.

If you are affiliated with a church, it never hurts to have the house blessed by an ordained priest or minister. One word, DO NOT get holy water and sprinkle it about yourself. This will not help.

Smudging- This is what Native Americans use to clear their living spaces of earthbound spirits and negative energy. You should be able to buy a smudge stick at any good metaphysical store in your area. Instructions should be with the smudge stick, or you can ask how to use it properly where you buy it.

Doing one or both of these things will make a difference. If you continue smudging at regular intervals every two to three weeks, they will eventually leave.

Good luck.

Mary Ann
